The Saco Valley Gem & mineral Club was founded in April 1961 with 25 charter members and included famous mineral names: John Oliver, Orman McAllister, Bill Ross, and Henry Barbour (who was our treasurer for the rest of his life!)

Present at that first meeting were Brownlow “Brownie” Thompson and wife Dorothea. For 27 years most of the monthly meetings were held at their home in Conway.

The Club was well named because about one third of the membership came from the Saco Valley in Maine and still does.

Field trips are a big part of this club’s activities and are not only held in maine, New Hampshire and Vermont but to Canadian locations in Quebec, Ontario, and the Maritime Provinces.

The first show was held in 1964 and was called the “Swap, Talk, and Brag Day.” That format was very popular for many years. The show now is held in September at the Albany Town Hall in Albany, New Hampshire and features dealers, mineral displays, and very popular auctions.
